Math 9A - Period 3 - Day 2
Tuesday, Sept. 15: At School
Today we learned how to log in to Microsoft Teams, then we completed an assessment so that I could see where the gaps are from Grade 8 Math. This will help me to make sure that I spend extra time on those areas this year.
Wednesday, Sept. 16: At home
We will start off easy. For today I just want you to get used to using Microsoft Teams.
Task 1:Introductory Assignment/Survey
If you haven't already filled out the survey under "Assignments" on the general channel, do that first. Once finished, complete task 2.
Task 2: Meet Your Classmates
1. Make a post on your class' channel (The Day 1 or Day 2 channel depending on which day you are...not the general channel) to tell the class something about yourself. You could also upload a picture or video of you, your pet, or anything else that shows us something about you.
2. Comment on at least ONE other person's post (positive interactions, only).
Task 3: Assessment
Complete the assessment I gave you in class. Please do not get any help with it or use a calculator. I want to see what everyone can do on their own so I know what I need to cover.
That's it for today! Come prepared to learn about Fractions tomorrow! Bring your calculators, binder with paper, and a pencil.

Since the Grade 9 students do not get to participate in "Take Your Kid to Work Day" this year (due to Covid19), I decided to take a class to talk about how Math is used in different careers. We also looked at the various math pathways that lead to graduation and the opportunities or programs each pathway will lead to after high school. We specifically looked at NBCC and determined which high school math pathway you'd have to take in order to meet the admission requirements for various NBCC programs.
At the end of class, I gave you back your midterm.

Today we learned how to find the area of composite 3D shapes. When finding the surface area of composite shapes, we must calculate the area of all the 3D shapes separately, add them together, then subtract any areas of overlap. Below is a video of a how to find the surface area of a composite shape made of cylinders. The same process can be used for any shapes, although the formulas will differ depending on the shapes present.

Today we completed a lesson on similarity in shapes. Please see the introduction video below that explain what it means when two triangles are "similar" in Mathematics:
What does it mean when shapes are "similar": Video
When we know shapes are similar, we can set up a proportion between sets of corresponding sides in order to solve for a missing length. See the videos below for some examples:
Solving for a missing side in corresponding shapes: Video 1
Solving for a missing side in corresponding shapes: Video 2
Solving for a missing side in corresponding shapes: Video 3
Knowing the rules for similar shapes, we can also test to see if shapes are indeed similar by comparing the ratios of their corresponding sides to see if they are equal or not. See the videos below for some examples:
Are these shapes similar: Video 1
Are these shapes similar: Video 2
After watching all the videos, complete the following assignment to practice the concept of similarity in shapes.
